The scammer offered to extend a loan of up to $15,000 with funds available instantaneously to people with low credit scores, but first insisted on the target meeting an insurance policy to ensure repayment. The insurance policy involved the scammer depositing checks that would later bounce into the target’s bank account and then requesting repayment of an amount equal to the deposited checks by requiring the target to make a deposit to a Coinbase money machine that converts the deposited cash into bitcoin. The deposited checks subsequently bounced, but not in time for the target to see the scam and the target lost the money deposited into bitcoin. The total amount lost was $800. The scammer also elicited the target’s online bank account access credentials, residential address, email and last four digits of his SSN and after contact was made by the target with his bank reporting the scam, his bank divulged that there had been multiple attempts to access his bank account from unrecognized devices originating from offshore, either India, Nigeria or Pakistan. Target has since locked all of his credit reports and put each one on a fraud alert and has changed the login credentials for his bank account.
