I purchased a 6 month subscription from seoulbox as a Christmas present for my daughter. They send a box of S Korean snacks/trinkets every month for 6 months. There was a 12 month option, but not in my budget. This subscription ended in May 2023. Last night I received an email from PayPal, stating that seoulbox had made a withdrawal from my account. I had not renewed my subscription. It was a one-time purchase. I went on to the seoulbox website paypal gave me and was directed to a cancellation page, which I clicked cancel, but that only cancelled the 6 month subscription starting in December 2023, not the one they just charged me for. I've not received anything and nothing has shipped for the order they signed me up for June 1, 2023. So I contacted seoulbox and requested a cancellation and they ignored my request until the PS at the bottom which said they would not be issuing a refund for something that hasn't shipped yet and will ship 1 every month. I opened a case with PayPal in which they did nothing, and said sorry, within a span of 5 hours, with no attempt at mediation. I cannot reopen my case with them, there is no option to do so. I contacted my bank, but it was after hours and I had to wait until they opened, at which point it was too late to stop a payment because it was already being processed. She said since it's a debit card, they can initiate a request, but can't do anything satisfactory like they could if it was coming directly from my account. I have since removed my debit card from PayPal. But aren't there laws in the US protecting consumers from not purchasing something against their will, allowing them to cancel and receive a refund before an item has shipped? I'm stunned that they can just renew my subscription without my permission and just randomly pull money out of my account and receive no accountability in return.
