Initial contact was made online, looking to purchase a Burmese kitten. A selection was made and $950 paid to Deston Muller, presumably a breeder in N. Doon, Iowa. The payment went via Zelle to Deston Muller at [email protected]. Later, we received a notification that the kitten would be delivered by Lovely Pets Movers on the following day. Still later, we received a clearly bogus demand for $995 more to cover insurance for the delivery, accompanied by a promise that the delivery driver would reimburse this amount in cash. One tipoff of the fraud was the address of Lovely Pets Movers in Portland, ME but with a N.California area code (707). Others included clearly fake entities (U.S. Aviation Commission and the SPCA Commission and Insurance Department) to try to legitimize the insurance requirement. We contacted Deston Muller by e-mail, telling him about the insurance demand, and he answered simply that he forgot to tell us. When we wrote back to cancel the purchase and ask for a refund, he never answered.
