I called the Netgear Customer Service number because my husband accidently reset our brand new internet modem to the factory settings. It is only 3 months old, purchased at Best buy and a subscription was never part of needing this regular modem. I called the number online with Netgear, ###-###-#### and was told by 3 different customer care associates that in order to use my modem, I had to buy a security subscription for $169 for 3 years. I questioned this several times, but they all said the same thing, that it is REQUIRED to use my modem, and that this requirement became a LAW for modems in 2024. I really needed to get my internet running, so I paid this, though it did not feel correct. Since I had called the Netgear number, I fell for it. It was a paypal invoice of $169 sent to me, and it did not have a contract or any details attaches. After hanging up, I read online about this Netgear Scam and that it is NOT required to have the security subscription to use my modem that I just bought. They are lying to vulnerable customers. I will never buy from netgear again, a company that I have always used and trusted. I have reported this to my Credit card, and to paypal. Please investigate this with Netgear, it is very alarming. Thank you
