I was contacted by a Mr. Nampei Yanagawa who performed an interview with me using Skype. I was given the job and sent a contract of employment along with a legitimate W-4 document. The company sent me a check to purchase office equipment. The check arrived and Mr. Yanagawa was insistant that I use my banking app to deposit the check. This seemed scketchy to me.Instead, I took the check to the bank to be verified. The bank verified that the check appeared fraudulent but also called the bank associated with the check who also verified that the check was fraudulent. If I had used the app to deposit this check, it would not have detected the fraudulence, the check would have bounced, and I would have been held liable.
