Pop up on internet browser locks computer and advises user to call toll-free line because their data is subject to being stolen by hackers. Person from India answers line and gives you a scare tactic that you must pay him $199 right now to remove malware or your identity and other computer info from websites will be stolen by hackers. They take control of your computer for 30 minutes, install freeware ad blocker and their own spyware.

My laptop locked up and their website came up to contact them immediately. It said laptop had a virus and they were from MS-IT and would fix the problem. I called number, they took remote control of my laptop, said they were installing software to fix the problem and Iaptop would be protected. The three people I talked to had Indian accents and were hard to understand. The one in “accounting’s” name was Thomas. I paid them $500 for everything. I later realized this wasn’t what they said it was. They convinced me because my laptop froze, Looked like Microsoft and I didn’t know what else to do.
