Someone claiming to be from the Technical Support Team of a manufacturer called to resolve my problems with a device. I was asked to authorize remote control of my computer, and was advised that there were many error messages on the computer which were the cause of the problem. Removing them would take about an hour, and then the software I was trying to install would be done. Payment via PayPal was requested, and the invoice charged in USD, although the service provider is in Canada. No tax numbers were provided. The following day, our regular support person examined the computer, and determined that many files had been changed, and the antivirus protection removed, while additional programs to lock out the regular support person, but allow the scammer access. PayPal reversed the payment, and I subsequently received several harassing phone calls including profanity and threats.
