When I went to purchase a $40 gift certificate, she wrote that amount on the paper but when she handed me the debit machine, it read $45.20. When I questioned her about it, she said that was the tax. When I said that there is no tax on gift certificates, she said that customers don't like to pay the tax when the come in so they charge it now.

However, I've had a gift certificate from there before. When you use it, they charge the tax so the they are double dipping on that amount.

She also told me I didn't need to pay the extra if I gave her cash so they are obviously not claiming that money.
