Type of a scam Fake Invoice/Supplier Bill
My mom died 2 months ago and the grief state of foggy mind made me disregard my usual "scam detector" mindset. It was late at night when I checked my email account and saw what looked like a legitimate invoice for an expiration on one of my business websites from my website host Squarespace.com. I should have doublechecked with Squarespace BEFORE I paid the "invoice" which the email said came from "Joe Miller". When I called American Express a few minutes later they told me the payment had gone through to "MIKEMARKETINGTOOL.COM" and the address listed was one in London. However when I checked back a few days later, the address for this bill was now listed as one in Berlin. The website where I made the payment to was gosafedomain.com ........ I doublechecked with my website designer and she said that she also received an email from "Joe Miller" but recognized it as a phishing scam and deleted it. I wish I had doublechecked with her BEFORE I fell for the scam and made an $86 payment!!! My website designer said how they did this particular scam is they sent their phishing email via my website which then forwards it under the host (Squarespace)'s email server so at casual glance it appears to be coming from the legitimate host you expect would send your domain renewal from. ALWAYS check before making payments!!!! American Express advised me to report to ScamPulse.com because they told me they cannot refund my money since I willingly gave my Amex card for a payment, albeit an illegitimate scammer.
