Microcentric LLC Reports & Reviews (1)

Microcentric, LLC was incorporated in Jersey City, NJ in March 2017. File No. 0450155460 . The scammer, who used the name Tom O'Dell, somehow breached our McAfee and Windows security systems so that a pop-up window blocked our PC monitor after clicking on an innocent -looking news item (about Korea) on Yahoo.com. The pop up prominently warned against turning off the computer, and said it was necessary to contact Microsoft techs in order to resolve the problem. We could not exit the screen and were afraid to turn off the computer. The scammer, who said he was in Eugene, OR, then persuaded us that he could remove the pop up and then he could resolve any issues via remote access. He repeatedly said he worked for Microsoft and that what we needed was MS security system (we, of course, we already had). We let him access our computer, he claimed that McAfee was not compatible with Windows 10, and that he would fix it. He then said he would provide "3 years of Network security and antivirus" services for $318. I agreed to it, he installed a phone number for his office (which cannot be traced, we discovered), and I paid for the "service." He gave me a fake invoice with the MS logo, but no address. He had me scan the check into the computer, which he retrieved, and, using Mobile Micro Business Capture, deposited the check in a Fulton Bank account, NJ?, and it cleared my bank. Two weeks later, he called again, said he forgot something, said "they" noticed we had problems with our "drivers," which he offered to repair etc., as before, for $189.99. I paid, as before, but realized, finally, that it was clearly a scam. I immediately stopped payment on the second check, closed the bank account, changed all the passwords, and installed a new security system, which scanned and found a Trojan Horse type infection that it removed, plus some other items that were quarantined. The second check was presented for payment, but rejected, and I have heard nothing further from these scammers. I have reported the scam to Microsoft, and to the Consumer Protection department of the Federal Trade Commission.

Bottom Line: While we are senior citizens, it is not our age, but our lack of confidence in our tech-savvy-ness that caused us to panic and allow this to occur.
