I received an email from "[email protected]" (the real email address for PayPal) claiming an invoice had been updated and I had an $800 charge for Google E-Gift Cards. The email looked extremely similar to PayPal emails when notifying you of a transaction. Below that, it read "We've detected that your PayPal account has been accessed fraudulently. If you did not make this transaction, please call us at toll free number +1 (800) 580-0793 to cancel and claim a refund. If this is not the case, you will be charged $800. 00 USD today. Within the automated deduction of the amount, this transaction will reflect on PayPal activity after 24 hours." Thinking I was going to lose $800, I called the number listed on the email. A man answered, apologized for my inconvenience and then asked me to get onto Google Chrome to type in microtechsolution.org. I repeatedly asked "can we not just cancel the transaction?" and he said "you're not listening to me. we did cancel it, but now you need to secure your account." I proceeded to type in the URL he listed onto Google Chrome. Once the site loaded, and I realized there was no connection to PayPal, I asked him "I'm confused as to why this is not on the PayPal site?" He immediately hung up. I called the REAL PayPal customer service number afterwards and she confirmed that no fraudulent activity had taken place on my account, and that my account is still fully secured. I ended up doing some research on the fake Micro Tech Solution. They used to be XXXXX XXXX Solutions and were reported many times for scamming people into "remote IT service". On the current microtechsolution.org(which only shows up on Chrome), there is a refund page where they ask for everything from your name, phone numbers, address, date of birth, and bank name.
