Medicare- IMPOSTER Reports & Reviews (6)

My mother received a phone call from a supposed Medicare rep and they asked if she could hear them. She said “yes” and they hung up.

- Los Angeles, CA, USA

The caller called and asked for me on my husband's cell phone number! I didn't wait to hear more of his message.

My 87-years old friend received a telephone call from someone claiming to be from Medicare yesterday. They asked for her Medicare card number and she unfortunately gave it to them. She said the same man then called her back and asked if she wanted some type of medical equipment (she thinks an ankle brace) and then she got suspicious and told him no and not to call back. The damage is done because she had already given out her new Medicare care number with the first call. She does not have caller ID, so I could not pull up the phone number that the person called from. I am afraid there will be charges against her Medicare card that she did not authorize. What should she do if that happens??

Impersonating medicare saying they needed to update information.

We received a call with a San Diego County area code. Caller was a female spanish speaker wanting to talk to the medicare beneficiary of the household regarding confirming personal information on medicare card to mail the updated medicare card. Caller provided an employee number, kept mentioning that they needed us to confirm the name, medicare number and address because they could not do it on their end as they needed to verify that they were talking to the correct person. Whenever we tried to assess validity of the call, as in asking if we could go in person rather than provide information over the phone, but caller mentioned that there wasn't a designated person at the offices and due to the high volume of people that will be affected by the new cards being mailed out, they would have to do this over the phone. Caller also mentioned we could call directly on the number in our medicare card to verify information but that the wait times would be too long to do so and doing it with the caller then and there would speed the process. To reassure her validity, caller kept mentioning that the call was being monitored as they are from a government agency. They had also called prior regarding providing orthopedic supplies and also mentioned the health insurance provider that the medicare beneficiary has which made it seem that they were from Medicare. Their tactics were very thought out and had we known that Medicare does not call then we would have not talked to these scammers at all. We called Medicare to file a report afterwards.

My 87-year-old friend received a call at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday from a heavily accented man claiming to work for Medicare. He called from this number: 617-768-1787. He told her they had not received her form requesting the new Medicare card and asked her to verify her name and address. He named her and her address and she verified the accuracy. I fear the "yes" she used to verify the information may have been what the caller was after. He claims he will send her another form to fill out, and I advised her not to fill it out if it indeed arrived in the mail. Medicare will never call you or email you and ask for information. She knew that, which makes the call baffling.
