my father-in-law (82 years old) received a call last week saying they wanted to send him a back brace (which he does have back problems) and wanted his SS#. When he said he didn't have it, they said "well don't you know it by heart?" & he said no. Then they asked for his Medicare information and to give them the ID # on his card...he did not know that number is his SS number. Then they wanted his doctor's information, name, phone and address of the doctor & said they would contact his doctor & then it would go from there.
