"Details. The mark of a really great con." - Steve Martin, "Leap of Faith."

I received a very convincing and detailed email about a woman who was moving and was giving away a Steinway baby grand, free to anyone who would pay shipping costs, complete with photos. It came through a co-worker who seemed to know her (he didn't, he was just being polite), and when I looked for the company name minus the llc, favorable ScamPulse.com reviews came up.

Here was the email:

INITIAL EMAIL:

From: Mary Edgar

Date: Thursday, October 27, 2022 at 5:50 PM

To: XXXXXXX (colleague)

Subject: Piano For Adoption

Dear -----

I have a Baby grand piano which I'm looking to give away to a passionate music lover. Let me know if you will be interested or know someone who might be interested.

Regards,

Mary Edgar

COLLEAGUE RESPONSE:

= This is so kind and generous of you! I am definitely interested. Is there a time this weekend when I could take a look at the piano? I have plenty of free time on Sunday. Thanks a million!

"MARY'S" RESPONSE

It's a Steinway baby grand piano, Model S, Length 155cm, Width 147cm, Weight 263kg, truly exceptional tone and touch, It's in a good condition last tuned April. It used to be owned and played by my late Husband. I'm moving my properties, I'm settling for a home of lesser space, so I'm hoping to give it out to someone who is a passionate lover of the instrument.

It's currently in storage in California with the Movers I employed to move my properties from my house to Kansas. If you really don't mind making new arrangements with the Movers, I can attempt to get in touch with them to reroute it. This should not attract too many charges since the distance can be recovered within a day. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but do let me know if you wish that I talk to the movers. Just so you know, I am not giving out a scrap or a waste. It’s in excellent shape. Do you want it re-routed to you?

At this point, I bit, because the conversation seemed like my colleague knew her. This is where the scam moves from "Mary" to the fictional moving company.

I thought the request for zelle or bank transfer was suspicious at that point and looked up "Magic Moving and Storage". There were favorable ScamPulse.com reviews, so I asked via email, on the same chain, if I could send money via paypal. They said yes. I was suspicious when a single name came up to be paid ("Annette Quillinquin") and another name came up after as having been paid, ("DAVYNNTAYLOR"), but having worked with builders who often get paid in their own name, thought it still legit. When later that day they sent curiously disjointed emails about delivery times, my husband suggested calling. So at this point, I looked up "Magic Moving" and called the number on the web - it turned to be a legitimate company called "Magic Moving," and the proprietor asked "Wait, did you send money to magicmovingllc? It's a scam. I get five calls a week about them." So these creeps took the name of a legitimate company, added llc, and suckered people in. I rechecked the email and called the phone number listed there - sure enough, a non-working number. A ghost company.

I was able to stop payment with my bank by going there right away - note: if you use paypal, never use the personal/family option. If you do, you have to go through your bank to stop payment.

The fishy names to watch for:

Mary Edgar

Annette Quillinquin

DAVYNNTAYLOR

It turns out to be a national scam targeting music teachers, particularly ones in Kentucky. 'Cause we're just rolling in money. What lowlifes.
