He looked around our furnace and water heater. Then he told us the 2 equipments were 10 years old and the company could make a free upgrade without charges for us and will keep the same rental rate as before. He kept talking and made me believe I will get benefit like energy saving by giving the same rental. At the same time, he asked me some information like my name and birthday. He talked and talked, emphasizing the rental would be kept the same, diverting my attention while he asked me information and filled the paper. Then he passed me a paper to sign and made me believe that was a service delivery confirmation to install the furnace.
Early in the next morning, call was from the company to schedule the installation. In the same day, the new furnace was installed and the old one was removed. After the installation, we are requested to sign a certificate of installation. I questioned the company why they only changed the furnace not the water heater at the same time as the technician said. The feedback was the water heater was out of stock, would reschedule with us later.
When I compared my first 2 bills from the gas provider, I discovered that was no any rental fee for my furnace at the beginning, the rental was charged after the new one installation. And I found the water heater was rent from another company not this company. Then I realized that the old furnace was our own, not rent. I brought out that paper I signed in basement. It was a 10 years rental agreement, even without monthly fee written on it. I then realized I became a victim of a scam. That means he cheated us and took away our own furnace, instead made us rent their equipment with a high rate for 10 years even not writing a clear rental rate.
The points are: 1) The man got a list on hand, with the information of a list of addresses and closing dates,owner names, he knew we just moved in the house. We were busy cleaning the house, and the boxes were not opened yet. We did not understand every detail of the house yet. 2) He kept talking, covering lots of topics, diverting my attention from the paper content in my dark unfinished basement. 3) He even didn't put monthly rental payment on the paper, instead there was a print cost term I can't even understand. And there were other terms protecting itself. When I visited the office to negotiate with the company, I was told there would be a 3.5 percent increase for the rental every year.
The company locates in a very small and shabby room. There was only one person over there when I visited. I can't believe I need to deal with such a company. The equipment is so important to a home,relating to comfort and safety. I can't believe this happened to us. * *** * *** *** ** *** ** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** ** *** * *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** ** *** *** *** ** *** *** *** ** ** ** *** *** I know contract is important in a society with rules of law. But I believe this kind of business actions should be banned. And any unreasonable contracts can be judged and voidable. Honest people should be protected in a fair society.
My family moved to a new country and started our lives. This made us very frustrated and do not know how to fix it. It is a long term agreement with a business without reputation and cheating people. I believe the company keeps targeting potential victims every day. And I believe there are other people who lack of knowledge of a house management like us. I really hope a business like this will be investigated and punished.
