Linguistic Consultants Reports & Reviews (1)

- Los Angeles, CA, USA

Linguistic Consultants is an agency that recruits and provides interpreters. I was contacted by the company this year to work as a Sign Language interpreter. The first time I learned about this company, I was contacted by "Sue". She offered me a pay rate and as an inexperienced interpreter would do, I agreed. I provided information to account for my level of interpreting skill, however "Sue" was only interested in my availability. I accepted the job since I was rushed into making a decision. I had 40 minutes to arrive to the location which was a driving distance of 30 minutes in traffic. I received a check from the company (handwritten in the section that reads "pay to the order of") within a week, along with phone calls for more interpreting assignments. I reached out to "Sue" and offered to send in a resume to provide information of my education and experience regarding American Sign Language. I was told that submitting a resume wouldn't be necessary. This response was alarming to say the least. ASL is not a popular language, therefore requires evaluation and proficiency exams. Soon, I found myself receiving checks that were short to no pay at all for my work. My only information about the company at the time was my interaction with "Sue", no last name, no address, no email. My phone calls were ignored once I began to request pay for my work. I shared contact information of recent graduates that completed also an Interpreter Training Program with "Sue". I later found out that my associates were not paid for their interpreting work either. I learned the hard way, but this was an eye opening experience for me. The job confirmations were through text message which are not legal documents. I was fooled to work for free and underpaid for a tri-lingual furthering my education in interpreting. This is a warning for interpreters new in the field like myself. I should have followed my instincts when I realized I was "hired" no questions asked. There was no hiring process. BEWARE to those seeking interpreters from this agency! Linguistic Consultants will send you interpreters that 1. Have not submitted resumes 2. Have not passed a proficiency exam 3. They have never met!
