I was initially approached by a recruiter via my student email account. The email stated that I seemed like a potential candidate for a Data Analyst internship; if I wanted to know more I had to email the ‘senior technical recruiter’. I was then asked to download an app called ‘WIRE’, where I was asked various questions related to performing data analysis. The interview questions seemed legit, as well as the job offer I received. I was offered a competitive wage ($25.90) and a benefits package. Where things got suspicious was when I was emailed a check ($1900) with instructions on how to mobile deposit the check. After I confirmed the check had been deposited with the ‘Senior technical recruiter’, I was then asked if any of the deposit was available. After confirming that $225 was available, I was asked to send this money to a ‘vendor’ via ‘Zelle’, who was supposed to send me “work materials”. I never went through with the transfer and it’s too early to know if the check fully-cleared yet or not, but something seems off.
