On January 30th, I saw a posting for a contractor job on Maui. It was posted on LinkedIn under the company name of: Krilla-Kaleiwahea (K2). I sent the supposed company owner (Peter Krilla) a direct message on LinkedIn, letting him know I had just submitted an application for the open position. He replied to me, and said they would be making a decision in two weeks.

A couple of days later I receive an email from a man named: Santiago Jaramillo. I thought that was odd, since the LinkedIn post showed Peter Krilla as the direct hiring manager. This Santiago person sent the following email to me:

Hello *******, I hope this email finds you well!

My name is Santiago and I am a recruitment consultant helping K2 hire for the Quality Control Specialist position. We received your application, thank you for your interest. This position needs to be filled urgently as K2 would like to have people start as early as next week so the process will need to move quickly.

Please use this link to choose a time on my calendar TOMORROW, if possible, to have a quick discussion about the role and get you scheduled for a panel interview with the Team. Kindly let me know if none of the times I have available work for you and we can find a different time.

Thank you,

Santiago

I agreed to a phone interview with him via WhatsApp. That was the first time I felt a bit strange about it. No Recruiter has ever contacted me that way. I ignored my suspicions though, since I have been out of work for almost three months. This Santiago person and I spoke for about 20 minutes. He appeared legit… until my next interaction via email with him. He was supposedly setting up an interview between myself and three other men from this K2 company. Here is his email to me:

Hello *******,

Thank you so much for speaking with me yesterday about the Lead Position with K2. The panelist had a shift in schedule, and I would like to know if you are available for a panel interview on Friday, February 9th, at 8:30 am. HST, 1:30 pm EST. Beck, copied on this email, will add you to the invite and send you the link once we confirm the date and time of the interview.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Thanks,

Santiago

I agreed to the date and time on that Friday. Two hours before the Teams Meeting with the “panel”, Santiago emails me to tell me that one of the panel members is not feeling well. He requested to move it to Monday instead. I told him that was fine, and I’m sorry that person was ill. I felt a little odd, but still not bad enough to suspect a scam. On the Monday the panel meeting was to take place, I receive this email from Santiago (2:26 pm PST):

This event has been updated with a note:

"Hello ****, Apologies for moving this interview once again. The start date was pushed back so these interviews do not need to take place in one day. I hope Wednesday the 14th at 9 am HST, 2 pm EST works for you. Thanks, Santiago "

Changed: time

I emailed this Santiago person back right away, and told him Wednesday was not going to work for me. His reply to me was:

Hello Matthew,

How about tomorrow or Thursday? When are you free HST?

Thanks,

Santiago

So I replied back to him that Tuesday, at 4:30 pm PST would work for me. Thursday wouldn’t. I never heard back from him again. That is when I realized something is not right here. I even direct messaged the “owner” of K2 on LinkedIn. I asked him whether he has a recruiter named Santiago working for him. He never answered me. So not sure about that either???

After receiving that last email, I thought to myself, this is NOT a legitimate job nor company. It can’t be. In my almost 60 years, I have never been asked to change an interview date/time. To be asked to change it THAT many times is absolutely not possible. No professional company would do such a thing. I looked up this Santiago person, and he is actively looking for work. That just seemed odd to me. His “business” is registered in VA, and a woman is listed on it as well. His LinkedIn profile says he’s from Washington DC. The K2 website lists a Washington DC contact number, yet it shows a business address in Honolulu?!? That is another red flag. The last reason I believe this job to be a scam is this:

© 2035 by Krilla-Kaleiwahea

The bottom of the supposed company website shows that copyright date. No business has a future date. It is supposed to be the date you first posted your copyrighted work on your website. You can update the date for the year you make any changes on it, otherwise there is no reason to do so. It also seems sketch that this business has only been around since 2022, and both of the owners claim to be Hawaiian. If you take a look at them… you will agree that there is no way they are. If this K2 company is legit, then perhaps this Santiago person isn’t. I think neither is though. I ask that you please look into this matter, and verify that they are who they say they are. I just don’t want anyone else to be misled like this. Nor get their hopes up, only to be let down. If this turns out to be for real… then this is the most unprofessional people I have ever dealt with.
