Kay/Jay/Kamrun through AirBnB Reports & Reviews (1)

I was involved in a bait and switch scamming scheme through AirBnB. I found a rental apartment through AirBnBs website and paid ~6k for a two night stay in New York City. After having strange interactions with the host and a complete lack of communication in the two days leading up to check-in, I started to grow weary and suspicious given the host's reluctance to communicate with me on check-in details.

To confirm my suspisions of nefarious activity, I then began digging through reviews of the property and host, going back nearly a year, and uncovered upwards of 10 scenarios where a) the host cancelled on the day of check-in citing pipe breaks, renovation delays etc. (anything rendering the apartment uninhabitable, which AirBnB does not penalize hosts for per their policy and b) offered an alternative property, which turned out to be sub-par and often dangeorous. This scheme allows for the host to not be penalized for cancelling, and it is my understanding that after guests agree to check-in to the alternative property (out of desperation for a place to stay), they are not as easily able to obtain a refund through AirBnB.

Once I noted these cases, I immediately contacted AirBnB to understand a) why they hadn't taken action to follow up on guest claims of bait and switch tactics by this host (who also has links to several other properties that AirBnB maintains on their website) and b) how they were sure this individual was verified and would not do the same to me. They agreed to reach out to the host to prompt them to share check-in details. No less than 30 minutes after my call with AirBnB support, the host cancelled my reservation citing "no AC or hot water, so unable to host." I am left to assume that, had I not taken action, he would've attempted the bait and switch with me in the same manner the day of my check-in had he not been alerted to my suspicions by AirBnB making contact. While I was refunded by AirBnB and pre-emptively avoided loss of money for this attempted scam, I remain extremely frustrated that even after I spent hours collecting evidence and proving connection between several AirBnB listings and attempted fraudulent activity perpetrated by this host, AirBnB still has not taken action to remove these rental listings from their website. This is not only negligent, but extremely irresponsible for AirBnB to continue to turn a blind eye to repeated fradulent behavior on the part of hosts they allow to list on their website.

I am filing this compliant a) against the host (who appears to go by Jay/Kay/Kamrun/Elle - at a minimum) and b) AirBnB who continue to allow this host to leverage their platform without reprecussions.

I've included the link below to the property I contracted with Jay/Kay on through AirBnB. The only information I have on this host is a phone number that was used to communicate outside of the AirBnB platform. I would be happy to share additional evidence uncovered linking this individual to additional properties and host accounts on the AirBnB platform. Most of these established connections can be found through the positive guest reviews, which I am certain are fake. The same guests provide nearly identical reviews across the group of suspected fraudulent properties, and reviews of hosts from these properties all seem to have Kay/Jay listed.
