I found a rental opportunity on Craigslist. I reached out to the email address associated with the post and began corresponding with an individual who identified himself as John Whiteman. He asked some initial tenant screening questions and had me fill out an application. We spoke on the phone and he accepted our application. After accepting, he offered to reserve the right to rent the property with a refundable security deposit of $2,250 (equal to one month's rent). He noted that I would not be able to tour the house until the current tenants moved out about two weeks later. I paid the deposit via Venmo to an account he described as his wife's (@madeliene-galace). At this point I was a little concerned, so I did some research and found evidence that the owner of the property was in fact a Mr. John Whiteman. We continued corresponding over the next two weeks via email and text to schedule a time to tour the property. On the day of the tour, I spoke with him again on the phone and he said he had sent further instructions via email. I did not receive anything from him and have had no responses via phone, email, or text since then. I found other contact info for a Mr. John Whiteman associated with the rental property address and gave him a call. He said that he knew someone had posted his vacation rental home on craigslist and was posing as him, confirming that I had been scammed and that the scammer was fraudulently misrepresenting the actual Mr. Whiteman.
