Deborah Reynolds was contacted by a man named John Peterson (AKA “The Locksmith”) who held himself out to be a tax attorney with the Tax Defense Network. Mr. Peterson informed Ms. Reynolds that there were tax issues related to her unemployment payments but did not offer Ms. Reynolds much clarity about the situation. Before she could get Mr. Peterson to answer any questions she had, Mr. Peterson passed the call off to someone else in his office named Rose (last name unknown) who gathered her financial information and asked Ms. Reynolds about opening a new DocuSign account. It was at this point that Ms. Reynolds became suspicious about the call. Ms. Reynolds called the Social Security Administration asking about the tax issues related to her unemployment payments, but the SSA informed her they did not know of any issue that she was likely scammed and should contact a lawyer. Ms. Reynolds has received subsequent phone calls from other individuals purporting to be from this same company, including one from a Marina/Murina. Rose, who purportedly works for Mr. Peterson, has called her over six times. In August, Ms. Reynolds received a sales contract from Mr. Peterson (which included an arbitration clause and a payment plan for services) which contained her sensitive personal information, including her bank details.
