I met someone named Johannes Morten on the Plenty of Fish (POF) dating website back in November of 2021. My online relationship with him lasted until late September 2022. I must report him to you. He was extremely pushy on POF. He relentlessly pursued me day and night chatting me. Constant love bombing. He demanded that we leave POF to chat on Google Hangouts and then on WhatsApp. We never met up in person because he suddenly in December had a job opportunity as a contractor to work overseas in Belgium. He kept claiming that he was coming back to the USA soon, but plans always changed, and he never did. He professed his love to me and said I was his soulmate. Mostly we chatted and talked on the phone daily. I was convinced that he was a real person who had genuine romantic feelings for me. We would chat, video chat and talk on the phone a lot. He demanded that I buy him iTunes gift cards so we could still communicate, because he was “low on data.” He was extremely manipulative and aggressive in his demands. I mistakenly took it for him having a “passionate nature”. He claimed that he was a Brazilian living in the USA in Arizona and a U.S. citizen, but working overseas on a contract in Belgium. He spun so many lies. I believed him because I was deeply lonely and vulnerable, being isolated during the pandemic. I thought I was in love. I am a fool for doing this, but I was so desperate to stay in contact with him. I bought him the gift cards. Now I realize that was a scam, as iTunes gift cards can’t be used to buy phone data at all. Then in March he began to have many emergencies, where he would ask me to send him money by Bitcoin. He had health emergencies, family emergencies and legal emergencies. He promised to pay me back every penny. At first I said I couldn’t afford to send him any money and I didn’t know how Bitcoin worked. He ignored that I stated I really couldn’t afford it. He instructed me how to do Bitcoin, and emotionally manipulated me into helping him. His needs became more urgent, he used high pressure tactics, and he claimed he was suicidal if I didn’t help him out. He claimed that I was the only person who he trusted to help him. He claimed his client was planning to sue him and his bank account was frozen and he was in desperate need of money to pay his attorney. I trusted him completely and now I realize that I was foolish. I sent him money by Bitcoin and I now deeply regret it. On September 19th 2022, my bank Fraud investigator called me, she had advised me that I was a victim of a Romance Scam and to cut off all contact with the person I was being manipulated by. I was delusional and I still insisted he was legitimate, and the more she talked the more she opened my eyes to the truth. I assured her that I would stop all communication with him. I didn’t know what the term was, I had to research “Romance Scams” online to find out. To my deep dismay and horror I realized that I was actually a victim of a romance scam, a crypto currency and a gift card scam. Then I cut off all contact with him. He is the worst kind of scammer! I am beyond embarrassed and humiliated and saddened. Not only is my heart broken but I have been made poorer now financially because of him. I can’t believe this happened to me. I am typically a very smart person and very much aware of scammers. This man conned me so completely because he had my heart and my trust. I feel deeply violated. He abused my trust and my hard earned savings.
