I was contacted about interviewing with JHPiego after they reviewed my resume and portfolio website for a graphic designer position. Red flags did pop up, but wanted to further pursue this opportunity to work from home after my recent layoff from my former employer just before the holidays. Subsequent emails and Google Hangouts were answered honestly, but further red flags appeared when answers to my simple questions about what software I would need, to equipment that I would have to purchase became unanswered. They sent me overnight a check for almost $8,000 to purchase office equipment and supplies which I was instructed to deposit into my checking account. This is where I got my bank involved. They checked out if the check was fraudulent and it was. I did not spend any money on any supplies so consider myself lucky I had *** Bank on my side. Honestly I’m embarrassed that I fell victim to this type of employment scam, but relieved that I had my bank employees and resources to check the funds I received to set-up my home office and put a stop to it before it wiped out the limited funds I do have at the present time. No personal information was exchanged between myself and this scammer except email address and home address for mailing purposes. My bank has added this firm to a national data base of fraudulent businesses as well. Preying on unemployed people, trying to find a job to support their family especially during the holidays, is totally unacceptable to me. I should have been more cautious and noticed all the red flags which I will in the future thanks to this experience.
