As the project progressed, not only did he ask me questions that he himself should have known the answer to -- example being "do you think we need to tile the ceiling" (it is standard to tile the ceiling for a steam shower), he was very rude, would often stand in my living room and shout my name repeatedly, and in the end, did very shoddy and even dangerous work. He didn't know anything about electrical as he spliced a higher gauge wire to a lower gauge one, which could cause a fire! He also didn't build the walls properly since in CO, they need to be floating. Instead he anchored them all directly to the concrete. He did some weird messing with my utility box and cut a bunch of holes in my exterior wall and then just left them open. The last straw was when he didn't even understand CO building code for insulating below ground walls.
I definitely let him continue too long - mostly bc I was scared to fire him due to his mood swings and temper. He acted like a person on drugs or with a personality disorder. Finally at the end of the week he told me that he'd give me the rest of the receipts and then I could look them over and pay him that weekend or the following week. In his drugged up state, he didn't remember this so then he basically stood in my living room screaming and whining that I needed to pay him at the end of the day -- even though I was just handed receipts 5 minutes prior. He then threatened to "rip everything out". He continued to carry on and make threats for about 30 minutes until he finally figured out that I wasn't just going to hand over cash on the spot without looking at the receipts or verifying the work. He also then invoiced me for $1000/ day instead of the $950 he had originally talked about. There was no written contract so there was no way to prove him wrong.
I did have another contractor come over late that night to video and point out all of the things that were wrong -- basically the everything was wrong. The entire thing needed to be ripped out and started over. A simple thing like pouring level concrete, he couldn't even do. The other contractor told me it was the worst work he'd ever seen.
In addition, when I started picking through the receipts, he was charging me for tools he bought and for other items that weren't even for my project. FRAUD.
Long story short, don't let this guy anywhere near your house. He doesn't understand electricity, he doesn't understand thermodynamics, and he doesn't understand simple physics. He could have caused my house to catch on fire and it's just not worth the risk. Get a licensed electrician for electrical work. Get a licensed plumber for plumbing. He's cheaper than most everyone else and talks a big game ("so and so flew me out to do a job in Texas because I'm that good") so it's enticing to go with him, but it's just not worth the danger he puts you in. He's not who he says he is, no matter the yelp reviews. He has anger issues, mood swings, and it's just not worth dealing with it. I think it's the common case of "handyman turned remodeler". Many handymen figured out they could pretend like they could remodel during covid bc there was such a shortage of reputable companies to actually do it well. Notice, he is unlicensed -- and it's for a reason. His work would never pass an inspection. I also do not think he's insured or bonded. Meaning if he hurt himself on your property, you could be liable. You are also out of luck if he steals something.
