Type of a scam: Government Agency Imposter

My husband received a Notice of Tax Lien letter stating he owes the IRS. This couldn't possibly be true. They do not include my husband's SS# or any other identifying information but his name and address. It states hours of service as 6AM to 6PM M-F, but does not include time zone(CDT, EST etc). It included a "PIN" # which when I go on the site and put in the "pin#" says "We're sorry, but no mailing offer was found for this PIN". Also when I look at the sample "letter" included on the website, it shows that the "Pin #" should be 12 digits long, the one listed on his supposed letter is only 11 digits. It's requested that he respond by 6/23/23. The letter states that a (844)700-2333# should be called immediately to assess settlement options and to place his case in compliant status to avoid potential collections activities. It also included a QR code to scan to go directly to the website to create an online account. An address for correspondence was not included/listed.

Received a letter stating I owed the IRS. This simply isn't true. I logged onto the IRS website and reviewed my filings. I haven't owed taxes in years, in fact the IRS pays me money back every year for the last 3 years. If you owe the IRS for past taxes they will never send you a refund in the future until the balance is paid, instead they will apply it to your outstanding balance.

There is a phone number, no address and the hours of operation say 6a to 6p M-F, however they don't specify a time zone.

The IRS only works with a small set of private collection agencies; see below from the IRS website:
Effective September 23, 2021, taxpayers may be contacted by the following private collection agencies (PCAs):

CBE
P.O. Box 2217
Waterloo, IA 50704
800-910-5837

Coast Professional, Inc.
P.O. Box 526
Albion, NY 14411
888-928-0510

ConServe
P.O. Box 307
Fairport, NY 14450
844-853-4875

Prior to September 23, 2021, the IRS contracted with the following private collection agencies:

CBE (Waterloo, IA)

ConServe (Fairport, NY)

Performant (Pleasanton, CA)

Pioneer (Horseheads, NY)

A letter was sent in the mail that appears to present a legitimate "Notice of Tax Lien." It names the last four digits of our business EIN, gives a phone number to call along with a pin number, and identifies the creditor as the IRS.

The letter further states that a judgment has been filed against the company for unpaid taxes in the amount of $242,122.08 and that a response is needed by 5/19/2023 to avoid the enforcement of wage garnishments, property and asset seizures, or levies.

It also directs the reader to a website: taxregistry.org to "get help quick."

There is no other information for this alleged company, such as a mailing address to send correspondences to.
