Finally, I stumbled upon the audition section (with a printed out sheet of paper that said "IPOP" instead of "International Artists") and was advised "not to worry, 'IPOP' and 'International Artists' are the same." About 100 other people were in attendance. Usually, an open audition like this entails getting into a line outside of the door and each person going in separately to audition for the talent scouts.
Imagine my surprise when we were shuffled into a room together (all 100+ of us) where we watched a 20 minute video of "success stories." Then the owner of the company spoke for over an hour. He made several tasteless political comments.
One thing I noticed when the owner of the company was speaking was that he was largely making the pitch to kids. There were many children there (even though the audition stated that the time period in which I showed up was for ages 19-34). The whole gang of "talent agents" made representations that only a few people would be selected and that no one should be discouraged if they do not get called back. Several times the phrase "cream always rises to the top" was made.
Finally, "auditions" started. It was chaos: loud music was playing; the people waiting for their turn were talking amongst themselves while attempting to keep their children occupied; they separated the judges into two tables with the idea that you start at one table and then get to move over to the other table to do your audition twice; several hours into this, the judges got tired so they just separated the group so that some people got to audition for one table or the other (not both in most occasions). There was one lady that was supposed to be monitoring this but she let people cut the line, at one point she was walking around rocking someone's baby.
Finally, it was my turn. At this point, I have waited over 3 hours watching others read from the same script as me. I do the "audition" which is attempting to scream the lines out in front of the judge at the table due to all of the noise. She paid me a compliment and then gave me a contract to read over while advising that "if I get chosen, I need to be ready because my journey would start immediately.
So I start to read the contract.... You should never have to pay for representation. This was not even representation! Despite never once during the 20 minute video, the hour long speech, the several hours we were all in a room together, did ANYONE explain that this was not an open audition - rather, it was an "interview" to determine whether or not you could qualify to pay them between $1900 - $5000 for "training" to try and better your odds to get representation in the future.
I would not be writing this if there were not so many children there thinking that this was their moment. Seeing how many parents were smiling with tears in their eyes thinking that their kid is going to be a star.
It's criminal. This agency preys on the vulnerable using a thin veneer of compliments mixed with false representations. They tell people what they want to hear so that they can get rich off of doing the bare minimum.
