I applied for a remote position. The person conducted a sort of email interview with work-related questions. After answering them, he responded that I was qualified for the position and told me specific equipment and software (said it was specific for privacy) I would need to purchase once I received the funds they were sending. I didn't provide my bank account info, so they sent a check through UPS. I deposited the check, and my bank checked the account the funds were drawn from, and said they were available, there would be no hold and funds in my account were available immediately. I began purchasing the items required for orientation, but realized that none of them were compatible. I canceled/returned everything, and asked "the owner" if there was someone I could actually speak with about the materials. He said no, and that he has lost his hearing and mostly communicates through email and text. He told me to just send the money to him and a vendor they work with would set up my equipment and ship it to me. He first asked me to send to someone through PayPal, but my payment wouldn't go through. He then told me to send $1000.00 through Zelle to another person, which went through. He said he got it and to send another $1000.00 to the same email, but by this time I was digging through any research on scams like this and found one. I had never applied for a remote position before, so I wasn't sure of the hiring process and if this was all normal. I did not send any more money, and am taking the issue to the authorities. This was clearly an employment scam with someone impostering the business.
