Victim Location 10021
Type of a scam Employment

I was contacted by a Mitchell Harris at Outlier, Inc. by text for a job opportunity. The text said my resume had been shortlisted for an interview and to contact the Interview Manager on Telegram to schedule the interview. I contacted the Interview Manager and right away she said we would begin an interview which she claimed ended in me being hired as a Data Entry Clerk for the company. Next day she attached me to a Training Supervisor who took me through the process of filling out an application form and signing an employment letter. Beforehand I had looked up Outlier, Inc. and it is a real business out of Oakland, CA. During this process I went through what most jobs ask you to give for identity verification. I gave my full SSN, pictures of my SSN card (front and back), full home address, Driver’s license info and pictures of it (front and back). He also had me do a face scan for identity on ID.me. After this I was informed that the company will be paying for my work from home equipment by a check that will be sent in the mail. I received the check for $5000 from FedEx through Wells Fargo. The Training Supervisor asked me to specifically deposit the check by ATM into my account which I did the same day. Due to the large amount of money I was informed that it would take 5 days for the check to clear with the bank. During that time I was asked by the Training Supervisor to pay $300 of my own money for a shipping and installation fee for the work equipment. I refused this request. Two days later it came back that the check was counterfeit so no funds were deposited into my account. The Training Supervisor asked me multiples times during these days to see if the check had cleared. I don’t know if Outlier, Inc. is a scam business but these people claiming to work for them are definitely scammers. They were so desperate for funds I was called an unbelievable amount of times and even encouraged to send money through Zelle, Vanilla gift cards and Apple gift cards. Thankfully, I did not send anything and only lost a small amount of money from a chargeback fee on the counterfeit check.
