I received a call from a 1-800 number telling me that my WE Energies account was past due. The customer service person said he'd transfer me to an agent to process payment. I was passed over to a person who called themselves Michael Valentino who informed me that if I didn't pay the balance on my account within one hour, my service would be shut off. When I informed him that I paid my online account balance via the website, he told me that wasn't an acceptable way to get my account back into good standing because of the delays with processing credit cards. So, I was told to go to CVS or Walgreens and purchase a MoneyPak card, call him back, and share the code and pin on that card with him. Then, he would process payment. The amount was $490, which did not match any amount on my actual bill. I was ready to do this and the CVS staff thankfully red flagged it for me, so I called him back to ask more questions. The scam fell apart pretty quickly and he admitted he's not in the US and that it's a scam he does as a way to support himself. It's important to mention that the actual phone operation sounded INCREDIBLY legit. The menu options all seemed consistent with real We Energies, the hold music mentioned We Energies...it was very sophisticated.

I received an unsolicited robocall telling me it's a disconnection notice for a bill past due and I could press 1 to talk to rep. I hung up.
