I applied for a "Data Entry Clerk" position on a website called Upwork.com. I was contacted by a man named Joe Smith saying he was interested in my proposal. He directed me to email Alison Feldman at [email protected]. I emailed Alison to set up an interview, and she replied by asking me to download the Google Hangouts app to conduct the interview. She claimed this would allow her to document the interview and show the department head so a decision could be made about employment. I downloaded the app, and contacted her with times that would work for me for an interview. She replied asking if now would be okay. I thought it was strange since it was a Sunday, but I agreed it was okay. She sent me a link to dealpath.com (a secure and real company website) to get a better idea of the company. She proceeded to ask me questions, but frequently used incorrect tenses and improper grammar. She also repeated, "I have few questions here on my desk which you are expected to answer, I believe you are ready?" At this point, I thought she might be an automated interviewer. She informed me the job was 15 hr./week and the pay was $30/hr. I agreed, and she told me to email her with my name, address, phone number, and email. I did, and she said she would contact me at 8am EST the next day with a decision. I then received an email from Upwork.com informing me that the job was taken off the website because it was not in compliance with their Terms of Service. The next morning she contacted me, and told me I got the job. She then asked what name I would like to put on the check for working materials. I thought this was strange, and I asked her what materials I would need. She said she would compile a list and get back to me by 3pm EST. I started catching on and looked up employment scams online. I tried to press her a bit, and I asked her who her employer was. She responded with the name of the CEO at Dealpath. Now I was almost sure that this was a scam, but I had also found a Dealpath recruiter named Alison Feldman on LinkedIn.com that looked legitimate. The picture on that profile was also the same person (but a different picture) in the picture attached to the gmail account. So, I told her my Google Hangouts app was acting up and would prefer if she called me instead. Her reply was, "That will be later today". So I waited for a call that never came. Later that day (around 8pm EST), she messaged me "Hello!" on the app again, and I was sure this was scam.

I am a freelancer, I use a website and app called Upwork to find my jobs. I seen a job listed for "Experienced Data Entry Person Needed for Short Time." I submitted a bid. I received a message from someone named Dave Ervis saying that he liked my proposal and my cover letter and would like to move to the next level. He proceeded to give me his recruitment email for the company. I wrote this email and received a response asking me to contact this person on Google Hangouts. I did. Someone named "Ashley Dowling" gave me a weird interview, did not ask me any of the normal interview questions, but said that I was hired. She proceeded to tell me a little about the job, saying it was a "virtual assistant/data entry" title, that I would work 15h a week and make $30 p/hr. I agreed. She told me that training would begin on Monday. I explained to her that it would not work for me as I would be at my other job. I was contacted throughout the day and was sent a check to "pay for the materials I would use (it was for $900). I had already had a feeling that this was phishy just from how the person spoke (improper grammar, incorrect spelling, incorrect tenses) so I called Chase bank where the check said it came from. I gave them the account number on the check and they told me that it was an active account, so I took their word for it. I did a mobile deposit. This morning, "training" was to begin. The money was in my account at 0700, but as I talked with "Ashley" more, it was not making sense. She told me that I needed to forward the money through Zelle to a person named Stephanie Richter at [email protected]. At this point, I knew for a fact that this was not real. I looked at my account and the money was gone, so I called customer service for my bank and spoke with them about it. I was told that the check is being held and investigated for counterfeit printing. I went to my bank and spoke with them in person and they made a note on my account. I contacted Upwork and informed them of the scam. I am now doing BBB. I still have to call my State's Attorney and Chase bank.

I am still receiving calls and emails from these people.
