A person I have known for many years who is an artist contacted me via Instagram message to use a picture I posted for inspiration for an art project for a client. They said that they wanted compensate me for using my picture and send me a check from the client. I did not know that the friend’s account was hacked and was now being used by scammers. They had me mobile deposit a check for $2,500 and move the money around by means of Zelle and Venmo to different “vendors”. If I blocked the hacked account, the scammer would take money out of my account as a way to retaliate now following their demands. I have reported the account as fraud/scam and impersonating someone I know multiple times on Instagram, but the account remains up and running.
