I am currently living in Calgary, Alberta. I applied for a job opportunity on University of Calgary’s website a few months ago. A few days ago I got an email from (seemingly) University of Calgary saying they had accepted my application, it led me to a Google form where I entered my name, phone number and email address. I believe that was all the information I gave but I can’t fully remember.

A few days later, I woke up to two emails, one from “Ollie *******” ([email protected]) and one from “Benjamin *******” ([email protected]). Both emails were exactly the same, and they described this job as being Benjamin’s personal assistant. It went into great and thorough detail about it, enough to where I was convinced. I figured maybe Ollie was his assistant at the time and sent the email to me at first, and when I didn’t answer for a few hours because I was sleeping, Benjamin just sent it from his personal email.

Anyway Benjamin and I went back and forth discussing the job, and he sent me a whole job contract (which seemed very legit and I did sign) and another sheet asking me for my name, what bank I use, an address for the bank and my email for e transfers.

The next email after I signed all of that was him sending me a digital cheque for $2550 that was addressed from World Vision International, based in Mississauga, Ontario. Just one minute after he sent me that email he sent me a text message (no. +1 (214)-280-1712). This confused me for a number of reasons, including the phone number’s area code and why he’s already sending me this cheque (there was some story on how it was meant for me to buy supplies for the job). Also, I was at first confused on how he had my phone number but then I realized I gave it in the Google form that I was so sure was from UofC.

Anyway, after I took a step back and realized it was a scam, I blocked the phone number and all the emails. He still has my number and email and I still signed that employment contract. I don’t know what to do now. Please help.

I had the exact same experience except he targeted Queens university students (me). Word for word except there was no other person except him. I actually scanned the cheque almost losing money but it didn’t go through and I asked the library receptionist if it was a scam or not. If it’s not a queens email it’s most likely spam. Honestly they can’t really do anything without your bank information or SIN. I thought it was fishy too but nothing has happened after that.
