This person "Thomas Schoenfeld" used the ScamPulse.com website to contact us to request a painting estimate. When we received the ScamPulse.com email notification, we contacted "Mr. Schoenfeld" by email to get the address of the property, learn a bit more about his project, and to schedule a time for our estimator to meet with him at the property in order to evaluate his project for the estimate. "Mr. Schoenfeld" replied to the email asking, "Are you the owner of the business and do you accept direct deposit or check?" He then stating that he is "hearing impaired" and is currently "not in town". He did provide us with a local address and then also stated that he just acquired the house and that it is vacant and that he needs an estimate for an exterior repaint. When we looked up the address online, we saw that it was build prior to 1978 and therefore would require a lead test. The noted that the house was also listed as for sale, not as sold. We emailed Mr. Schoenfeld with the details for the need to conduct a lead test, an authorization form allowing us to test his house for lead, and info on what we charge for the lead test and forms of payments that we accept. He replied to the email stating, "I should do this payment together when I receive the total cost". We replied and explained that the lead test must be completed prior to providing an estimate, because we need to include the lead test results in our estimate, and detail that we will follow EPA guidelines if lead is detected. He then replied, saying our business is "unprofessional". We called the listing agent on the property, and we were told that "Mr. Schoenfeld" is not the owner of the home at the address he gave us, and he is not associated with the property in any way. The realtor also stated that the house is currently occupied and in fact is NOT vacant, as "Mr. Schoenfeld" had stated. The way this scam works (we know because other local contractors have been scammed) is that when the contractor presents an estimate, the "owner" accepts the estimate. When the contractor asks for a down payment, the "owner" sends a check for the full amount of the contractor plus extra that was "accidentally" added to the check amount. When the contractor notifies the "owner" of the mistake, the "owner" tells the contractor to just deposit the check and send him a check (or usually a money order) the "overage" difference. The check that the "owner" used to pay for the services then bounces, and the contractor has lost the money he sent back to cover the "overage". In one case that we know of, the contractor has pressure washed the house and had it half painted when the real owner of the home arrived after being on vacation and asked, "What are you doing? I didn't hire anyone to paint my house!" The contractor then had to repaint the house for no charge, therefore, being scammed by "Mr. Schoenfeld" yet again.
