Guy called my hotel room at around 8am. He identified himself as management, but I think he said he was from a corporate office of the hotel or some sort. Which was the first red flag. I’ve been here for a few weeks and did not recognize the voice. It was immediately odd that he had no knowledge of the guest that was in the room and asked for a name. He said there was a power surge and it caused a glitch in the system and now the system was showing the room as vacant. If I didn’t provide info I would lose my room. Very odd considering I work in the hotel industry. So I grew suspicious. He asked for a name and email but didn’t ask for stay dates or any other info that is normally asked. He immediately jumped to credit card info. I told him I could go downstairs and swipe my card. He said that would not be necessary for my convenience I could give the card over the phone. No way. Hotels never want to take cards over the phone for fraud purposes. So I insisted I would swipe my card. He was getting mad and slightly argumentative and said I didn’t understand and I could just give the card number over the phone. I then told him I didn’t have my card on me and I would have to get it. He still insisted I give him the card number. I once again repeated I didn’t have my card on me and he would need to be put on hold. He said “okaaaay” and scoffed. I went to the front desk to ask if they forwarded a call and they said no but they were aware of the scam calls because other guests have received the calls as well. After that I returned to my room and the man was still on the phone. I hung up the hold call and he called back 2 times. I believe he identified himself as a “Tim Harris” but I just hung up. He knew a lot of hotel lingo, but was clearly not fully familiar with hotels processes.
