On 05/08/2021, after being picked up at the airport by the rental car shuttle van, I appeared at the Hor’s Power rental car agency near the Miami Int’l Airport to pick-up a vehicle that I prepaid for, Upon arrival, I was asked to provide proof of insurance (which I provided) and was told that my coverage limit was not enough. They require $500K in liability insurance for their rental cars. I advised I had never had a coverage issue before and the agent claimed that they only accept bigger insurance such as AIG or State Farm as a waiver and that I needed to purchase additional coverage at $29.99 per day to get the vehicle. The total of this extra surprise insurance coverage totaled $119.80+tax which totaled $128.19 (wh9ich was more than the cost to rent my pre-[aid vehicle. Furthermore, I was asked to purchase a toll tag at $17.99 a day plus tolls. I advised that I would pay tolls separately to SUNPASS, if necessary (after feeling ripped off with the extra insurance charges). While in the city, I was advised by law enforcement colleagues that since I was a ticked passenger that the rental car agency should not have charged me for extra insurance. I retuned the vehicle on 05/11/21. Upon being back in Texas, I recently received a paid in full invoice on 05/27/21 claiming that I had 15 toll violation @ $25 a piece for a total of $375 + tolls which amounted to $7.82 thus a total of $382.98. This is absurd. I called the SUNPASS customer service and discovered that tolls range from $.80 to $1.50 depending on location and that they only charge $2.50 for a one-time total invoice generation fee to add to an accumulation of tolls. I called HORs Power Rentals to rectify the situation and was it was the company policy and they could not remove that toll violation fees. However, I advised the agent that they never disclosed upon renting the vehicle that they were going to charge $25 per toll, if I did not purchase a Toll Pass. In addition, they are not the toll authority and if SUNPASS only charges the tolls+ an invoice generation fee, what gives them the right to charge extra money cloaked as toll violations when they are not the tolling authority SUNPASS and I still have to pay for the tolls? The agent still claimed it was company policy. As an out of state consumer, I feel misled and scammed. The extra $511.17 charged by this company was over 4x my pre-paid rental cost of $112. This egregious overcharging scam has to stop hurting consumers.
