1) Man A came to the door saying that they worked on a neighbors' roof from where they could see damage on my roof'

2) After a brief "inspection" he gave a quote $800.

3) Work was to start next day at about 11:30 am, a crew of about 4 came with a leader Steven at about 1:30 pm and crew went up to the Roof

4) I just got inside when Steven came to the door and claimed that he needed $1200 more or will just do a substandard and useless work within the $800 budget which may actually lead to more severe damage. Fearing this, I signed off a new contract for a total of $1650 and paid cash.

5) The work was a short shift, in about 2 hrs done, and left about 4:30 pm.

6) Steven repeatedly promised a written warranty which I not received yet.

A man approached me while in front of my house waiting for a contractor to start renovation in my basement.He said he is currently working in my street and he noticed few of my roofing had gaps and rain can get in causing damage inside my house. I looked and asked the cost, he said its small and will only give coffee money to his guy. I thought he is a good person to offer free help to a frail senior. He then mentioned that he also do all kinds of house renovation. So I said I am outside waiting for a contractor who is suppose to start renovating my basement. He then offered to look at the job and maybe give his take. He seem good person so I showed him downstairs and he looked around, didn't ask question but I explain what I want it done. I should have notice that he didn't really look and tell me any details of what he can do. He said its straight forward, tear down old walls, flooring and ceiling then install new ones in place. While I pointed out the things I need to and important points for the renovation, he didn't give any suggestions or thoughts how he'll accomplish work and repair. Its late and the contractor was no show. So after regaling me of his work I asked his quote and he said he'll do it for $3500, which is $500 more than the other person. But I thought he is a good person. He said he'll repair my roof now while his partner come and write the contract. He said his name is Steven White and his company is Victoria Roofing and Masonry, he is doing a lot of work in this area. The other person is David who came with legal looking company form . It says to remove old walls and floors and other work as discussed. Another flag I should have noticed that no details about the job as I discussed with Steven. Also the supposed roof repair was not done. Steven did not come back with his ladder to do repair as he said. I forgot about it as he keep telling me all his work in the neighborhood. I also agreed to advance $1000 accordingly he need to rent a garbage bin the following day as they will start tearing down old materials. The following day he dropped 2 men and they start tearing down floors and walls, but no garbage bin, instead he has a canvas spread in my lawn to put debris and bin will come after all old materials are removed. I found out the men do not know what really must be done. They torn down areas which I told Steven not to touch and left areas that must be done. Around 4pm Steven and David came and went downstairs then called me and said there are cracks in my concrete wall foundation and water is leaking in my basement. He said he can't install floors and walls when water is leaking inside as these will cause damage to whole basement. I asked what should be done. He need to dig on the exterior of the wall foundation to repair the cracks, then he'll repair inside cracks. He quoted $25000 and $8000 advance. My head was now in turmoil, I can't think properly except worry of what will happen to structural intergrity of my house if not repaired. Meanwhile both men keep talking of all the dangers if the cracks are not repaired as they keep expounding. In haste I agreed verbally and asked another $1000 needed deposit to rent the equipment to dig around foundation walls. I give another money in cash. By this time I realized there tactic to put pressure to agree and thereby extort more money from their target. All night I did not sleep, thinking of the situation and now I become suspicious that they are stringing me along to get more money from me. The following morning of the second day, he dropped 4 people to continue tearing down walls. I told them too that I don't have $25000 to do the repair now. I told them to finish tearing down, clean up and all the garbage remove today, go back to original contract and when I get the money in a few weeks I'll call to resume work. Steven and David left and I also left the house leaving the workers to finish work. I came back after an hour no workers, my house was left with doors wide open. The tore down areas which must not be touch, and left what should be torn down and taken away. I phoned Steven and he said the men will come back in 40 minutes. I told him the wall around water softener must be taken down ,diconnect water softener and taken out and be dispose. There are now 2 pile of garbage in my lawn of 4 feet high and that as discussed must be taken away today. He said it will be done. 3 hours passed and nobody came back except David and demanding $1000 again. I told him the rest of the payment will be given at the completion of the job. He insisted that the men must be paid and he need the money to pay for the dump truck to pick up the garbage. It was the agreement with Steven. Then Steven came in the house too and between the 2 of them I was shouted and insulted and . accuse of not following the contract, they are big men, very intimidating, glaring with anger at me. They insisted every agreement is followed by them, but that is a lie, nothing is completed, the work done was not as I discussed with them. Then I said I don't have anymore money for them. They left but David came back and shouted at the door that I can keep my money they don't want it, but I have to pay the dump truck when it came in a day. He also shouted that they don't want anymore to do with me and the job. I was shaking and feeling faint as they are shouting at me, I am so scared, I'm alone in the house, a frail elderly lady, I can hardly breath. After they left I lost consciousness and woke up around midnight, house is dark and I was shaking. Monday morning David came in the house insisted $1000 to pay the dumptruck. He is now scary to me and again I started shaking with fear, so I gave the $1000. My safety is more important than that money, these are 2 big men, they can easily hurt me physically. Then they left and I just collapsed on the floor. After a few minutes I asked the men loading the debris and they told me their fee is $400 not $1000. I do not wish this experience to other seniors like me. I have no income except old age pension, it will take me again a year to save that $3000 to fix my basement, buy washing machine and drier too. Maybe it will never be finish.
