Sought work for paint and roof replacement from this person who was referred from a friend. A check was written for $3000 for downpayment and materials, later finding out it is illegal to accept downpayment no more than $1000 in California. Second check was issued for $9500, later at which funds were able to be returned by my financial institution. Before approaching my financial institution, two workers reported to my home for work without foreman, stating that foreman was out of the country. This caused me suspicion of foreman, called the foreman to question whereabouts and cancelled job for unprofessionalism. Foreman stated that we could meet later in the week to “return” funds. Went to city to seek advice and found that scammer was not licensed for work and offered consumer material product for repair that is illegal in California. Visited financial institution to find options regarding negotiated checks. Advised precautions to safeguard accounts and file police report with local law enforcement. Was concerned of my safety that foreman said he would visit my home to return funds, was advised to find other meeting place such as police department or request peace officer be present during interaction at home.

Little work was completed and in poor condition.
