A contractor was working on my mother's street doing front tiles etc. My mom asked them to take a look at a tilted step at her house and they agreed to try and fix it. When they "finished" she saw that the step was removed and they told her that they tile broke. They insisted on getting up front cash payment of $1,500 to purchase new material to replace. At first they were very responsive (as I called them myself as well), however I as soon as they received the payment they just disappeared. We called many times. When they answered the phone the claimed they were busy but already bought the material. After a few weeks they stopped answering our phone calls and disappeared. I realize it's not a huge amount of money but it's heartbreaking to see a business taking advantage of an elderly woman just to get some extra cash. My mom thought she was being proactive because she made them sign a "confirmation" but I explained to her that it's not a receipt At the moment her stairs are broken and we need to find someone else who can fix it. I've attached the "contract signed". and happy to attach screenshots of the text messages. Hoping this would be enough to warn others.
