I reached out on Facebook to who I believed was the host of the HGTV show 100 Day Dream Home to find out how to apply to have our home renovated. I was contacted via Facebook Messenger and given information on how to apply, including a website link. After submitting my application through the website, I was contacted via email and informed that I had been approved. I was asked to provide details about the renovations we were looking to have done, along with the address of the project. Following one phone conversation, several emails, a signed contract with a construction start date, and wiring instructions to send 40% ($80,000) of the projected $200,000 cost, we went to our Credit Union to complete the wire transfer. However, they refused to proceed due to signs of potential fraud. I contacted my point of contact—who identified themselves as part of HGTV 100 Day Dream Home—and was told that sometimes Credit Unions refuse to process bank wires. I explained that the bank representative said they could complete the transaction via ACH if the request was legitimate. He told me he would speak with their financial office and someone would reach out. He later called back and said he had spoken with the financial department, and that I could proceed with the ACH. I informed him that the financial department would need to email me the next steps. That was when the emails stopped. Subsequent research by my Credit Union revealed that the website I was directed to for the application originated from a server in Malaysia on July 7, 2024.
