Hazel Martinez Reports & Reviews (1)

I received an email from a "Hazel Martinez" from Chicago, IL. She said she was looking at various artists' artwork and wanted to select one or more for a surprise anniversary present for her husband. She went on to say that several pieces of my work interested her and she wanted to purchase some. She wanted the prices of each of the three. I sent the prices. She said that she would send me a check and that I SHOULD WAIT UNTIL THE CHECK CLEARED and then contact her. Then her representative would be in touch with me to pick up the artwork. So I did send her my address...nothing more. Here's why I thought that this was true...two reasons: The check clearing thing made it seem legitimate. Also...currently I have my name out there because I do teach classes, seminars, give an occasional lecture and was serving on a state organization for 15 years. I do not have a website, but I have been contacted through this state organization to give a lecture or teach a class...all legitimate. So that didn't surprise me TOO much. I did wonder about the fact that the subject line in Hazel's email was 'Paintings.' (I don't paint. I work in a totally different art form). She asked for my address so that she could mail the check. I did give her my address...nothing more. This morning I was with a friend who told me about a mutual friend (also an artist...a painter) who had a very similar email sent to her....anniversary present, a surprise...etc. This mutual friend does NOT have her name out there in the public eye. She does not have a website. Her paintings are commissioned or sold to people she knows. This artist believes it is a scam. I couldn't see what advantage the scammer would have if I did truly wait and see it the check was legiimatet. But the two emails are very, very similar. I got home today and opened the mail to find a check for $700+ from someone I had not heard of...no accompanying letter...nothing... from North Carolina. So I am going to ignore that check. I do not know if the two things are related...but the Hazel Martinez email seems suspicious. Is this a scam going around?
