He started a conversation on LinkedIn. He then asked for my phone number so we could chat outside of the site. Text messages and phone calls were exchanged over a 3 week period. He informed me that he had to fulfill a contracted job in New Zealand on a rig. When he got there, he said he was having trouble with internet connection and asked for my assistance in exchanging emails for materials needed to complete his job. He provided me his "bank information" to perform a wire transfer to pay "the company" for materials. The next day, I was supposed to complete another wire transfer to pay the shipping cost of the materials. However, the account became locked. When I informed him of this, he started asking me to come up with the money. He said he needed to complete this project and his bank would not help him for 2 weeks. He was promising to pay the money back. He first asked for $42,000. I told him I didn't have it. Then he asked for $10,000. I told him I didn't have that either. Then he told me that the material supplier would take 10%. So, he asked for $4200. I tried to explain that I didn't have this kind of money and that my bank would be suspicious if I made that kind of transfer. After he exhausted all other possibilities, he asked me to purchase iTunes cards in amounts of $500, to make up the amount of money he was asking for. He said I could send them to him and he would sell them in New Zealand to get the cash and send it to the material supplier. I called him out on this scam and haven't heard any more from him.
