Being a senior I said I would never allow myself to get scammed, but I did. My furnace went out last night so this morning I tried local furnace businesses in the San Jose and Mountain View area to find help as soon as possible with the impending storm. Many were either only open weekdays or fully booked. I came across a Handyman Service online (no business name) and a guy called me that he could come by 10:30 am. I gave him my address and he showed up about 1/2 hour late, said he got lost, which it happens often if coming from a different city. He arrived in a black car with another man driving. He checked my furnace, tested a few times, and it seemed to work so I paid him $40 cash which is what he said would cost for his time. But I caught him before he drove away as I told him the heater was stopped working. He came back and said it appears to be the thermostat (made sense to me) so he had to go to Home Depot. He texted me saying they only had digital for $97 and that he would come back for the money to buy it. That would have been a red flag right there but I didn't have more cash and told him I would meet him at Home Depot to pay for it with my credit card. He never appeared at the Customer Service counter. I waited awhile, looked around but no handyman. Luckily AAA furnace called me to say he was one his way for an appointment that I forgot about cancelling. I didn't know what to do, will I have 2 repairman at my front door when I got home? Anyway I told AAA furnace to come and help me. So it turns out I did not need a thermostat after all. AAA repair installed a compacitor and igniter, all to the tune of $660!! So much for trying to save some money. BUT at least the furnace works, I lost $40 and got taken! So if you try to call a handyman you best get some sort of credentials, or have another person in the home to be sure there isn't anything unusual about the service. I do not remember his name but his phone number is (408) 417-4685. He is mexican and has a lot of tatoo's on his arms, his driver was taller than him with sunglasses so can't really describe him other than driving a black sedan (like Toyota). So live and learn I guess. At least I only lost $40. The unfortunate part though is he knows my address. I'm home most of the time and always have my doors locked but from now on guess I'll be leaving lights, the tv or radio on if I go out. Hope this helps anyone out there. It's better to go with a certified business than an unknown individual!

so I was looking for a carpenter/handy man to build custom cabinets in my home. I also had several miscellaneous projects which are too small for big companies but perfect for a handyman running a 1 man show.

Since I wanted to use only referrals, and since none were available from family and friends, I thought YELP would be the ideal referral "go to" site. In my experience "yelp" reviews have always worked out.

Well not this time. JAMES BONANOMI duped me of $2,500/-, he's disappeared and will not return calls or respond to texts/emails.

He said the job was too small to write up a contract and me trusting all the 5 star reviews believed him and transferred $2,500 from my bank account to his bank account as down payment for material.

Thereafter he promised me that the cabinets would be completed within 2 weeks during which he would send me pics of progress.

Within 2 days I realized that a tweak needed to be made in the design and I promptly called him upon which he feigned illness and thereafter disappeared.

I URGE that none use JAMES BONANOMI services, if you want to prevent losing money.

Since I had no contract, I do not know what next action I can take other than report to BBB.

If anyone has any advice please post.

I also hope and pray that James conscience will guide him to return my money.

James has destroyed my faith and trust in all vendors.
