I received a text from "Greg" asking for a bid on powerwashing a house and driveway for a home in Peoria IL. I explained my company doesnt offer those services, explained we do offer siding cleaning but its by hand. He asked for a bid. I went to the home, which was vacant, and gathered the information for the bid. i sent it to him by text and explained I would need paid for the job up front, since the home is vacant. He agreed. In a few days, i received a check for $2000 above and beyond the amount I quoted. Greg said since he is out of town, could I pay the carpetenter for him. This was not mentioned until i received the check. I agreed. I deposited the check, which was written on a company called Yakima Chief Hopps from the state of Washington. Greg said he worked for this company. I attempted to send the money to the carpenter via cashapp- but cash app flagged the account as fraudulent. In the meantime, my bank flagged the check I received as fraudulent and sent the money out of my account to the Hopps company in WA. When I confronted Greg on the phone about this scam, who had a thick indian accent, he cussed a lot and called me every name in the book.
