Same old scam - just different name. Unclaimed POD of $9,820,000 for someone with my same last name who died in an accident 8 years ago at "Energy Company" in Canada. In the past these letters stated that the policy became abandoned property after 10 years - now it's 8 - but 10% still goes to charities with the balance of a 50/50 split. Of course, a "high level of confidentiality" is still required. ITS A SCAM - DON'T FALL FOR IT.

A faxed letter was sent to me from an attorney, Alex Kavanagh, claiming to be a solicitor for a law firm, Gray Robert LLP, located in Toronto, Canada. The letter states that a permanent life insurance policy is being by the law firm for one of their deceased clients and it was in the amount of $9,820,000. Their client, Gary Weinhofer, had worked with the Energy Company in Canada and had died in an accident 8 years ago. The letter went on to state that they had tried to find his relatives and their search was unsuccessful. They claimed that the insurance company code stipulates that the insured permanent policy not claimed would need to be turned over to the abandoned property division of the state now that 8 years have passed.

The letter goes on to ask me to contact the law firm so that they could have my consent to in partnership with the attorney, Alex Kavanagh, for the claim of the insurance policy benefit. The letter asks to add my name to the policy and all proceeds will be processed on my behalf. It goes on to state that the attorney want 10% of the money to shared among charity organizations and the remaining 90% would be shared between the attorney and me.

The attorney asked me to contact him using his email address alex,[email protected] and CC [email protected] or call 1-416-907-9455.

I did not contact the scammer as I researched the scam and found that others have experienced this.

I did not lose any money and did not share any of my personal information with the person who faxed me.

On April 22, I also received a fax from Alex Kavanagh, Gray Robert LLP. It mentioned an unclaimed investment by a deceased client with an insurance company also in the amount of USD 9,820,000. Strangely enough, an inquiry to the Gray Robert LLP's general e-mail address published on the Internet was answered by Alex Kavanagh himself. Attached were copies of Alex's identity card and death certificate of the client and a certificate from the LAW SCIENCE OF UPPER CANADA stating that Alex Kavanagh was enrolled and admitted to the Law Society of Upper Canada as a STUDENT OF LEGAL SCIENCE and had successfully completed the bar exam.

The attorney asked me to contact him using his email address [email protected] and CC [email protected] or call 1-416-907-9455.

I did not contact him once more.
