I was on Indeed looking for a part time job. A job was listed under the name grants for veterans. I applied, was immediately contacted and offered a position. I was told that because of my background (I have 5 years of grant writing and budgeting experience) that I would need to take a non-accredited class being offered by Grant it First Consulting Services. This is a non-profit company without any employees and is run by volunteers and the director, Sabrina Carnell Williams. Sabrina and I had a Zoom session and she explained to me that I needed to pay $500 for this course, although Sabrina teaches the course, is not a professor and the certification offered would not be accredited by any institution.

I had a second conversation with Sabrina, in which she said my grant writing and budgeting experience were sufficient and she would send me materials for everything that I had difficulty understanding. I then received an email from Sabrina asking me for my zip code so she could charge me for the $500 course. I told her, as I explained earlier, that I would not be paying for the course and that I had 2 certificates in this subject matter from Maxwell, a top tier school in Public Administration at Syracuse University. Sabrina applied back that in order to write grants for her company, I would need to go through her program.

I told her it was unethical to ask volunteers to pay $500 for an unaccredited grant writing program, taught by someone with no teaching experience. Sabrina also told me that she made no money off the grants that she wrote and this was her way of drumming up some income for her company...Extremely Unethical.
