Google 6 digit code scam Reports & Reviews (1)

- Fargo, ND, USA

Description of Incident:

On 01.08.2023, Sunday, January 8th, 2023, at 12:29 I received a text message response in regard to an online advertisement I posted using Craigslist's online forum, to sell an item.

The person who contacted me first asked me if the item was still available, then once I responded, at 13:35, yes, they said, "Great. For my safety, can I send you a 6 digits random number to make sure your post real?" To which I said, "I don't understand what that means." They responded, "Please check your phone message and show me the 6 digit code?". After I did not respond, they followed up again, "Please show me the code", and after still not responding, another message, "???".

At this point, my senses alerted me to remember, that anytime a person is rushing someone else, that we need to slow down and make sure that they are not trying to bully us into making a mistake of some kind. Sure enough, a few seconds later, I received a text message from 22000 which is google voice's automatic short text system (I do have an account, and I can verify that it's the same automatic short text system that has previously sent me login verification requests when creating my account and logging in to my account), sending me a "xxxxxx is your Google Voice verification code. Don't share it with anyone else. https://goo.gl/xxxxxx" I deleted the account secure specific information in that quote and replaced it with x's; everything else is quoted verbatim. This text message was sent to me by Google Voice's automatic short text system in response to someone trying to login to my Google Voice account, the text was received at 13:48.

I tried to report it directly to google voice, but was unable to find success with reaching any live representative. Their site directed me to report at ic3.gov, I've reported to craigslist, since both google voice and craigslist have not taken any action; please help me investigate and shut down this scammer before they harm someone more seriously in our community. Thank you.

Relevant information:

The phone number that contacted me was 701.747.9191 - this is the phone number that initiated the scamming attempt.

The posting online that the person contacted me from (where they were searching for people to scam at) - is the Fargo, North Dakota Craigslist for sale board, general for sale.

I then finally responded with, "I'm not sure what you are talking about. anyways, the xx(item)xx is sold to a more with it buyer; so goodbye potential buyer." To which they never responded. I have not sold the item yet, but I remembered fraud prevention trainings I've had in the past, wisened up, and thankfully remembered that they would keep pressuring me until they were firmly shut down, so to keep myself safe, that is why I responded with a goodbye, no longer for sale, we have no business and will not be continuing chatting. Then, I immediately took down the ad on Craigslist.advertising, not tied to their virtual identity.

Please help me keep my community safe in investigating this, so this person is shut down and unable to harm less aware individuals. I almost had my google account hacked, which would have seriously compromised my virtual identity and my safety in many ways. Please help me take this incident seriously, and help shut down this scammer.

Sincerely,

Person who was victim of scam attempt
