I shopped at the local wholefoods so it wasn't surprising when I received a text with a link to sign up to be a mystery shopper. I immediately signed up via their SMS marketing to act or work as a secret shopper. I received a confirmation text stating that I will receive further instructions and a check for my time in the mail and wait for a few days. I signed up on 9 May 2020 and received another text on May 12 stating that the check and instructions were arriving on that day via Fedex. It did and I opened it and text this person back that I have it. I deposited the check on the same day and the check was a total of $2600. The check was enclosed with a two pages of instructions and specific instructions on what I need to do. Anyone receiving such a letter would be excited about it and proceed to the store. However, some things did not make sense for me. the instructions said I need to make a purchase of $2,000 worth of eBay cards from specific stores. Once I have them I have to scratch the back of them off and take pictures and send it right away. If I complete this within 24 hrs I would receive an additional $150 for my time. I wasn't sure why I would need to scratch them and send pictures when I will be the one going to shop. Additionally I only signed up because of whole foods but why is it asking me to purchase $2000 worth of eBay gift cards. It didn't add up. I called my bank and warned them that the check I deposited might be a fraud. My bank told me it would take 3-5 business days to confirm if it was legit. I decided to wait and within those days the person at the number mentioned above wouldn't stop texting me. That was another red flag. Any business wouldn't text a customer and just say hello did you do it yet? I need to know the status? It was almost demanding the status. I sat down and realized that I don't owe this person anything and if it was legit why send such a big check without a contract to ensure I didn't steal the money. I finally told them that the check bounced and they are a fraud. That person never text me again.
