I received a voicemail on my cell phone from a process server who stated they were sending court documents to my home address or employer they referred to my last name as my maiden name ( first red flag). Because I was concerned I contacted the number they left back when I got home and a man named James Burns? stated I was being sued by Chase bank for a balance owed on a credit card from 2001 (2nd red flag) as it is past the 6 year statue of limitations in NYS. He stated I owed $2,967.83 but if I agreed to pay tonight it would be settled for 1, 300+ dollars. I told him I did not have that money. He then allowed me the option a counter amount close to that amount and he would try to get it approved. He then asked for my email address because I was insisting that I have something in writing. He emailed me the settlement document. While talking with him I used a cell phone to dial the number of the Glen Oaks Law Group that was listed on the email document. As the phone rang he asked me to hold on and he answered that phone as well (3rd red flag). A legitimate law firm would not have to answer other lines. This man knew the last 4 of my SS# (I did not give it to him) he said it to me to verify.. and he knew my current address. I then counter offered them $800 (from an original supposed debt of approx. $3,000). He put me on hold for "approval" and in less than 2 min. he notified me it was accepted (4th ted flag). He then emailed me that agreement letter. I told him I would take my chances in court and hung up. A private number immediately attempted to call me back. I did not answer
