- Lakeland, FL, USA

At 3:30PM on 8/22/20 a pop up came on the computer screen saying the computer had been locked by Microsoft because a virus was origaning from my computer infecting the internet. given a phone no. 1-888-384-2251 for Microsoft support. The person on this line identified herself as a Microsoft Support member. She informed me it would require $156.00 for a one time clean-up and 12 mo. of tech support. I was the directed to a 3rd party Softeck Solutions (844-837-0313) for the tech help. They directed me to Giltedge Solutions for payment info. and the clean-up. After giving control over for the clean-up and paying the $195.31 I became suspicius and investigated the companies. I found no connection to Microsoft. I then reset my computer, stop payment on the check and changed all banking user names and passwords.

My computer locked up and redirected me to a website reportedly run by Microsoft saying that I had to call 1-844-809-2882 in the next 5 minutes otherwise my computer would be locked permanently. I called the number and allowed the "tech support" guy named "Michael Lee Chan" to remotely access my computer so that we could run the registry. The registry reported that I had a virus, and according to "Michael", only a Level 5 Network Security Engineer would be able to help me. He patched me through to an "affiliate" company called "Giltedge Solutions" supposedly based out of California,, and the tech took remote access of my computer again and supposedly cleaned it up and optimized it.

I was watching almost the whole time to see what he was doing; he installed a few programs supposedly developed by his company to optimize performance, clean my registry, delete internet cookies, etc..., and then installed what appears to be Norton Antivirus from Synamatec.

The whole thing reeks of corruption to me for a few reasons; 1. Everyone that I talked to on the phone had an accent and was supposedly representing a US based company, 2. They specifically told me NOT to contact Microsoft, or Charter (my internet service provider) or any other entity other than them for future computer problems, 3. Their company website, www.giltedgesolutions.com, is wrought with grammatical errors and syntax errors, 4. When I go to Google and search "giltedge", one of the first search recommendations is "Giltedge Africa".

It might be a legitimate company given that their security certificates check-out, and in that case, I would be happy to pay them for services-rendered if they bring their claim to collections. In the meantime, I am SUPER-UNEASY about sending them any money until I have confirmation of their legitimacy.

Thanks for taking the time to assess my query.
