I was trying to find an apartment to rent in Vancouver as I am moving out from current place at the end of this month (May), and I fell victim to an online apartment rental scam. I was looking at apartment rental listings online and I found one affordable apartment located in my desired neighborhood through ads on Renthello.com. I thought it was a bargain and immediately contracted the "landlord" or the "owner" George Ola through email and asked him questions about the apartment. He responded me through email and explained that it was due to career that his family had to transfer to West Africa (Nigeria). He said that he considered to sell the apartment but his wife suggested to rent it out to an agent who can take care of the place. He further explained they could not find one to get the place before they left Vancouver so they kept the keys and documents of the property, and I had to sent the deposit first so that they can mail me the keys and documents. I was not able to visit the apartment first until I get the keys that they promised to send. I truly believed that I will get the keys and had no doubt to their words. I've never use wire transaction before. According his words, money transfer through MoneyGram and Western Union is the only way to sent money to Nigeria due to their law. I've was fooled by his storytelling and agreed to sent him the rent continuously, for first, second and third month. It was when the forth month rent transaction went wrong and an agent from Western Union called me and asked me questions then I realized it was a scam. I have little hope to get my money back (CAD$3100 in total) but I want to report this for warning others not to be as foolish and naive as I am. I turned to the police but they told me they could do nothing to help and asked me to wait until the promised move-in day and when the keys and documents arrived. The scammer keeps calling me and emailing me for further money transaction and I am now so scared and helpless to know what to do next. The phone number of the scammer is 234 803 398 7362.
